Precision Education: A Conceptual Model to Advance Continuing Professional Development

Description: Escalating clinical and administrative demands limit physician bandwidth for continuing professional development and maintenance of certification. Despite attempts from boards and specialty societies to facilitate these activities, physicians participating in our focus groups expressed moral distress due to the inability to fulfill their professional duty to meet evolving competency needs.

The American Medical Association (AMA) has led development of a conceptual model of precision education: systems that leverage data and technology to transform lifelong learning by improving personalization and efficiency. Precision education enhances learner agency by aligning education with one’s actual practice, driving evidence-based learning.

This panel will share the recently published conceptual model and illustrative examples from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the AMA. The AAO IRIS® Registry provides participants with practice patterns and benchmarking to identify learning opportunities and improve quality of care. The AMA Reconnect AI algorithm (patent pending) mines electronic health records of a physician’s patient panel, generating sophisticated multifactorial queries of the literature to elevate anticipatory learning resources.

Precision education will drive learning that improves patient care and enhances physician satisfaction. This interactive session will engage participants in multiple rounds of discussion to explore how precision education could address current challenges to life-long learning and to consider opportunities to implement precision education for their specialty areas and in their local institutions.
