Engaging Physicians in Improvement Priorities Through the ABMS Portfolio Program

Description: More than two decades ago, ABMS added the requirement for quality improvement and patient safety (QIPS) work as part of continuing certification. However, Member Boards and institutions have had varying success in engaging diplomates in QIPS activities. These activities are more effective when physicians and medical specialists are meaningfully engaged. The ABMS Portfolio Program was created in 2010 to address the challenges and provide a convenient and seamless program to capture diplomate QIPS engagement.

Today, the ABMS Portfolio Program benefits Member Board diplomates, physician assistants (PAs) certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), health care organizations, and ultimately, the patients, families, and communities who receive improved and safer care. The program offers continuing certification credit to those physicians and PAs who engage in this kind of work. In this session, we will describe the development, evolution, and impact of the ABMS Portfolio Program, specifically the unique role the program plays in engaging physicians, medical specialists, and PAs in quality improvement and patient safety work.
